Ruumiin aukeamia
“Ruumiin aukeamia (in English: Openings of the body) is a long-lasting project with a focus on the politics of the body orifices. My gaze is in observing the norms, control and exercise of power over the body holes. Since 2018 I have been exploring the topic of body holes independently and in collaborations with other artists. The first artistic collaborations around the mouth took place on 2018 (Circulating Mouthpiece) and 2020 (Mouthpiece). Those performance works inspired me and gave the impetus to dive into the navel in 2022-2023 (Aukeama installation and Napapiiri dance performance) and think again with the mouth in 2024 (Jälkiä ja kaikuja solo exhibition and Jäljellä olevaa dance performance). With my work, I long to evoke body/minds limitless potential. In this series of works, the next concept I will explore through humor, sensitivity and intimacy is the anus.
In my practice, I look at the concepts of the body holes through the queer and non-binary gaze. For me, it means observing the world with open eyes and heart as well as with a radical curiosity. The openings of the body are (in my opinion) particularly controlled areas of the human body. They are places and spaces in between the inner and outer world, gateways and portals, that leak. Through corporeal and spiritual labor, I am seeking to open up space for the diversity of being. For me, it is something that exceeds the individual imagination. I look for paths toward collective imagination where the body can reach beyond human experiences.
With my work, I seek re-articulations of the body from a perspective of plurality. My contemplation on the body holes, corporeality, experientiality, and the inner world have expanded into reflections/realizations on infinity and limitlessness, where all beings are connected.” – Lin Martikainen aka Lin Da
